This winter has been one of the coldest in recent memory, and for the month of January it was mostly too cold to spend much time outdoors with the kids.  We were all getting a bit stir crazy a couple weekends ago and needed to get out of the house so we decided to head to Frenchtown for lunch.  Frenchtown is a really cute little town right on the Delaware River (on the New Jersey side) with several quaint restaurants, a great little toy store and candy store (the kids’ favorites) and the awesome Early Bird Cafe (Chris & my favorite – their almond croissants are next level).   I also have a new-found obsession with their ginger-tumeric tea.  On our way home from Frenchtown, we stopped at this cool frozen canal that runs parallel to the river.  This lovely path is so so pretty to walk along when the weather is a little nicer and everything is in bloom.  We tried to walk a little, but only made it about 7 minutes until the kids were complaining about the cold so we called it a day.  I can’t wait to come back here in the spring, summer and fall for nice long walks or bike rides (with Baby #3 too!).  🙂

Not having any more of the walk.  ⇓  Also, refused to wear a hat or gloves that day, natch.

The drive home through the snowy woods was so pretty.

2 weeks later though we got a break in the weather and it was in the 40s (felt like spring!).  We went to the creek near our house for a little exploring and ice-breaking.  Declan loved seeing the creek frozen over the day before and then seeing how it was melting, as well as how the water was running under the ice in some parts.  The sun was out and the whole scene was so beautiful. 🙂

They both wanted to climb out on more of the rocks (and ice) in the stream but this is as far as I would let them go.  🙂  Maybe a bit overprotective, but I kept having these visions of Declan falling through the ice into the cold water and then losing his hearing in one ear like George Bailey in It’s A Wonderful Life – and yes I realize I am a crazy person. ⇓

I can’t wait for the weather to get warmer so we can spend a lot more time outside again.  I am seriously over this winter and really hope the groundhog was wrong about 6 more weeks.
