While most women know to avoid using beauty products that contain certain ingredients when they are pregnant and nursing (like retinol, salicylic acid, most acne medications, etc.) but there are also studies that show that parabens and other chemicals (often used as preservatives in products) could also potentially be dangerous to your growing baby. With each of my pregnancies, I have tried to always “detox” my skincare routine, and each time around have found new products that I have loved and kept using after the pregnancy is over. I am so excited by how many natural-focused product lines there are today, even compared to 5-6 years ago when I was pregnant with Declan (I think this Belli line was what I used back then). I have received questions about the best non-toxic products from a lot of other pregnant friends recently so figured I would do a post with all my current favorites. Enjoy!
FOR THE FACE
CLEANSER – I recently discovered the Korean TATCHA brand thanks to a friend and have been obsessed with this cleansing oil, followed by this rice-enzyme face polish. (Or you can buy them both together as a set here.) My skin feels so clean and smooth after I use them – never dry, and also I haven’t had a breakout since I started using them, which can sometimes be an issue with all the hormone changes in pregnancy. The company represents that this product is noncomedogenic, non-irritating, non-sensitizing, dermatologist tested, and cruelty-free. It is formulated without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, urea, DEA, and TEA.
BEAUTY OIL – I cannot say enough good things about this RMS Beauty Oil. It has totally changed my skin and I LOVE it. My skin feels so moisturized and smooth, and I’ve noticed a real reduction in fine lines. I have been using it both morning and night. A little goes a long way – I only use 4-5 drops for my whole face. The entire RMS Beauty makeup and skincare line is made with raw, food grade, and organic anti-aging ingredients. It is formulated without parabens, sulfates and phthalates, and is also hypoallergenic, gluten-free, cruelty-free, and noncomedogenic. Winning.
DAILY MOISTURIZER – I have been using this daily moisturizer with SPF 30 from First Aid Beauty for over a year now and I love it. It goes on sheer, moisturizes well, and the company reps that “All FAB products are allergy-tested and free of parabens, fragrance, and harsh chemicals, and perfect for even the most sensitive skin.”
PRIMER – I love this primer, also by First Aid Beauty. It is great under makeup but is also nice even on its own.
MAKE-UP – I haven’t detoxed my whole makeup routine at this point (I still love this Laura Mercier foundation and powder), but I have rotated out a few things in favor of this RMS Beauty concealer and highlighter, and this Tata Harper cheek/lip tint (in Very Popular). I also sometimes use this Bare Minerals powder in place of the Laura Mercier foundation/powder and like the look of it, as well as the fact that it has SPF.
BLEMISHES – If I did get a zit/clogged pore (hi first trimester!), I use pure tea tree oil and it worked well.
FOR THE BODY
For all my pregnancies I have used the Mama Mio skincare line for my body and I love it. My essentials are the Tummy Rub Oil and the Tummy Rub Butter. I use these every morning after I get out of the shower and sometimes before bed as well (especially in the third trimester when my skin is really getting stretched). I gained 49 lbs when I was pregnant with Declan and didn’t get a stretch mark thanks I believe in large part to these amazing products. Their other body lotions are amazing too, but I love the smell of this SheaMoisture shea butter lotion in coconut & hibiscus (which you can generally find at any CVS or RiteAid) and have used it ever since I was pregnant with Declan 5+ yrs ago.
Hope this was helpful – if you have any other favorite all-natural products I would love to know!
